Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You!
Working smoke alarms save lives. It can save the life of you or someone you know.
This year, for Fire Prevention Week, commit to install – test – replace smoke alarms in your home.
Install
Evaluate your home – where do you and your family members or guests sleep? Does anyone have sensory or physical struggles? A smoke alarm should be installed:
- In every bedroom.
- Outside every sleeping area (hallway), including unconventional sleeping areas such as living rooms and family rooms.
- On each level of your home, including basements.
If possible, install interconnected smoke alarms; if one goes off, they all go off. Research and install the best smoke alarm to assist with waking and alerting anyone with sensory or physical difficulties.
Test
At least once a month, test every single smoke alarm – not just the ones you set off while cooking.
Press the button on the alarm to test, or follow manufacturer instructions.
Testing will also ensure everyone knows the sound of the smoke alarm, so they know to get out if they hear it.
Replace
If the smoke alarm does not respond when you test it, or if it is ten years or older, replace the the alarm.
